Sandy is the co-host of the <a href=\"http:\/\/ptpodcast.com\/podcasts\/pain-science-and-sensibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pain Science and Sensibility Podcast<\/a>.\u00a0 She is an international instructor, speaker, and has contributed blogposts for many of the top PT related websites in the world including <a href=\"http:\/\/entropy-physio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">entropy-physio.com<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bodyinmind.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Body In Mind<\/a>.\u00a0 Subjects she covers include pelvic pain, resilience, and conference proceedings.\u00a0 In addition, Sandy is a co-owner in a private physical therapy practice and is the Director of Programming for the Section on Women&#8217;s Health of the APTA. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FitPT:<\/strong> You started in neurological and orthopedic physical therapy, what made you interested in pelvic health and pelvic PT?<br \/>\n<strong>Sandy:<\/strong> This is a great question.\u00a0 I was working in outpatient ortho with guys who were having problems with pain during sex and it was due to mechanical back pain. It turns out that&#8217;s pretty easy to help. I asked the doc why he wasn&#8217;t sending me any women with problems having non-painful sex and that opened up an entire field!<\/p>\n<p><strong>FitPT:<\/strong> For someone (anyone really &#8211; PT, SPT, PTA, doctor or consumer) who doesn\u2019t know anything about pelvic PT, how would you described what pelvic PT is and why it\u2019s important for someone with pelvic dysfunction to seek the help of a PT who specializes in it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sandy:<\/strong> It is never normal to hurt during sex or leak (bowel or bladder).\u00a0 Pelvic health specialists can help 85% of people with problems get 100% better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FITPT:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been hearing more and more about the importance of the pelvic floor in runners at CSM and other PT conferences and I am interested in incorporating more of these concepts with my athletic population.\u00a0 What courses would you recommend, either online or in person (anywhere in the country) to start learning more and why these specific ones?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sandy:<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.juliewiebept.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Julie Wiebe, <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/physiodetective.com\/antony-lo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antony Lo,<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pain-ed.com\/team\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter O&#8217;Sullivan<\/a>. These are the best in the field.\u00a0 Neither you nor your patients have the time for less than the best!<\/p>\n<p><strong>FiTPT:<\/strong> I\u2019m also interested in pregnancy related courses. Are there any courses you recommend that don\u2019t require internal work or are there any courses that don\u2019t require you being a patient during the lab portion i.e. uses a professional patient?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sandy:<\/strong> Julie Wiebe or you can also call us at <a href=\"http:\/\/entropy-physio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Entropy Physiotherapy<\/a> and we will design a custom course for you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>FiTPT:<\/strong> What recommendations or advice would you give a male PT who is considering learning more about pelvic health\/PT and\/or pursuing a Women\u2019s Health Clinical Specialist designation?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sandy:<\/strong> Go to the courses.\u00a0 Boys have pelvic floors too and many men need guys to understand things\/relate to them.\u00a0 If a male PT just wants to see men, he can come to the entry level men&#8217;s health that <a href=\"http:\/\/entropy-physio.com\/sarah-haag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sarah Haag<\/a> and I teach.\u00a0 No vagina experience is necessary!<\/p>\n<p>Men have every right to this field.\u00a0 I fully support them in pursuing further education!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pgc-1733-0-1\" class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-empty\" data-weight=\"0.29967426710098\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today we are interviewing Sandy Hilton, PT, DPT, MS.
