{"id":16013,"date":"2023-02-25T11:52:16","date_gmt":"2023-02-25T17:52:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/?p=16013"},"modified":"2025-02-26T10:18:50","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T16:18:50","slug":"how-to-build-an-emergency-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/how-to-build-an-emergency-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Build An Emergency Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You&#8217;ve probably heard of one but you may not know how to build an emergency fund.<\/p>\n<p>This article describes exactly how to do it.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to go over what to focus on, how much should you put towards certain goals, and a strategy you can use if you&#8217;re currently working right now but don&#8217;t have a place to start.<\/p>\n<h2>Focusing<\/h2>\n<p>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/financial-planning-example\/\">financial plan<\/a> consists of three categories: Day-to-day money, money for your future self, and risk management.<\/p>\n<p>Many new people want to jump right into saving and paying off debt which is part of money for future self.\u00a0 However, if you don&#8217;t have an emergency fund you shouldn&#8217;t be focusing on those items.<\/p>\n<p>Instead you should be focusing on building your emergency fund and that is it.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, tip #1 on how to build your emergency fund is focusing your energy and time.<\/p>\n<h2>Exceptions To Focusing<\/h2>\n<p>Above I mentioned not to focus on savings or paying off debt.\u00a0 That does not mean ignore them.<\/p>\n<p>The first minimum would be if your employer offers any sort of 401k\/403b match, get that because its free money.<\/p>\n<p>If you are eligible to contribute to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/why-roth-ira-good-idea\/\">Roth IRA<\/a>, depending on your income level, you&#8217;ll want to put a minimum there as well. Typically, we start with a $50 minimum<\/p>\n<p>If you have debt, you&#8217;ll want to make the minimum monthly payments so you don&#8217;t end up in default.<\/p>\n<p>If you have credit card debt, you&#8217;d want to look into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancemoney.com\/how-does-a-0percent-balance-transfer-work-961094#:~:text=The%200%25%20APR%20balance%20transfer,have%20good%20to%20excellent%20credit.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">0% balance transfer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All left over money from there should be used to build your emergency fund.<\/p>\n<h2>Emergency Fund Strategy<\/h2>\n<p>First, you need to know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/how-much-emergency-fund\/\">how much to save in your emergency fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You then have to understand that building your emergency fund also consists of building good habits.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend picking one expense a month to cut.<\/p>\n<p>For example, get rid of Netflix.\u00a0 Do this for 40 days and most likely at the end of 40 days you&#8217;ll realize you don&#8217;t need it. Then go on to the next expense.\u00a0 This is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/how-to-budget-money\/\">budgeting technique<\/a> that we&#8217;ve seen work over and over.<\/p>\n<p>For the time being, let the money build up in a savings account.<\/p>\n<p>Once your emergency fund is saved for then turn your focus to money for future self and your next goal.<\/p>\n<p>This strategy can really help out if you&#8217;re feeling crunched for cash for the month and have no idea how you&#8217;ll save up for an emergency fund.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>The tips above will help you build an emergency fund fast.
