Now He Has Money!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Manage your risk and your return will be there is a lesson I was taught as a very young age.<\/p>\n<p>This story is an awesome example of how Chris managed his risk.\u00a0 By doing so he was able to avoid catastrophe.\u00a0 He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/how-to-manage-money-wisely\/\">managed his money wisely<\/a>.\u00a0 Now, he\u2019s got 75k saved before he\u2019s 30 years old!<\/p>\n<h2>Meet Chris<\/h2>\n<p>Chris completed his Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) in August 2019.\u00a0 He was eager to hit life running.\u00a0 He was 26 and this was the first time he\u2019d have a \u2018big boy\u2019 paycheck.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/physical-therapy-school-costs\/\">physical therapy school costs<\/a> have risen dramatically.\u00a0 Therefore, Chris had $220k in student loan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/physical-therapist-salary\/\">debt from PT School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, he\u2019d gotten married in summer of 2019 and his wife was pregnant.\u00a0 She was due in January 2020 was going to stop working in November 2020.<\/p>\n<p>He contemplated using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/50-30-20-rule-budgeting\/\">50-20-30 budgeting rule<\/a> but realized it was a bad rule to build a plan around.<\/p>\n<h2>Short-Term &amp; Long-Term Risk Chris Faced<\/h2>\n<p>Chris needed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/how-much-emergency-fund\/\">emergency fund<\/a>.\u00a0 When he graduated he only had $3,500 in his bank account.<\/p>\n<p>With the baby due soon he wanted to have six months of expenses saved.\u00a0 For he and his wife, this meant they needed about $9,000.<\/p>\n<p>The long-term risk centered around Chris\u2019 student loans.\u00a0 He spoke to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/fitbux-coach\/\">FitBUX Coach<\/a> and decided to use an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/income-based-repayment\/\">income-driven repayment plan<\/a>.\u00a0 He analyzed the difference between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/paye-vs-repaye\/\">PAYE &amp; REPAYE<\/a> and decided PAYE was the route to go.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the long-term risk was the tax he\u2019d owe in 20 years.\u00a0 Chris used FitBUX\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/income-driven-repayment-calculator\/\">IDR calculator<\/a> to estimate he would owe approximately $110,000.<\/p>\n<h2>The Risk Most Take<\/h2>\n<p>Many people in a similar situation as Chris often make one or more of the following mistakes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They don\u2019t save for the tax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/income-driven-repayment\/\">because they don\u2019t know about it<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>If they do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/idr-tax-bomb\/\">save for the tax<\/a> they start investing aggressively;<\/li>\n<li>They know they need to save for the tax but they don\u2019t because they rather save for a house; and<\/li>\n<li>They buy a car.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Chris Wanted To Do<\/h2>\n<p>Chris wanted to save for a house.\u00a0 He also wanted to start saving for the tax and investing aggressively.<\/p>\n<p>However, Chris used three tools from his FitBUX membership that caused him to pause and ask his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/fitbux-coach\/\">FitBUX Coach<\/a> what he should do<\/p>\n<h3>Tool 1<\/h3>\n<p>Chris had a 110 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/fitbux-score\/\">FitBUX Score<\/a>.\u00a0 His Coach explained to him that his Score was low because he had a lot of risk in his profile.\u00a0 Plus, having a child would be adding to that risk.<\/p>\n<h3>Tool 2<\/h3>\n<p>Chris used FitBUX\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/invest\/\">investment recommendation tool<\/a>.\u00a0 It informed him that currently he did not have the ability to take investment risk.<\/p>\n<h3>Tool 3<\/h3>\n<p>Chris wanted to know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/how-much-house-afford\/\">how much home he could afford.\u00a0 <\/a>Therefore, he used FitBUX&#8217;s home ownership technology.\u00a0 He figured out that he couldn&#8217;t afford a house right now.\u00a0 However, if he waited 2 &#8211; 3 years he&#8217;d be able to.<\/p>\n<h2>The Plan<\/h2>\n<p>Chris spoke to his FitBUX Coach and used our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\">financial planning technology<\/a> to see what he should do.<\/p>\n<p>Step 1 was to save for an emergency fund.\u00a0 He was lucky when it came to that because the job he accepted gave him a $5,000 bonus.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2 was to start saving for the tax.\u00a0 However, he was to invest conservatively for a year or two before taking more risk.<\/p>\n<p>This plan would accomplish multiple goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start saving for the tax for when his student loans are forgiven;<\/li>\n<li>Have a good amount saved that he could invest more aggressively in two years or they can use for a house when his wife went back to work; and<\/li>\n<li>Would reduce the risk to his finances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Avoiding Catastrophe<\/h2>\n<p>Everything started off good. By February 2020 Chris had $12,000 saved and his new born son was healthy.<\/p>\n<p>Then catastrophe happened.<\/p>\n<p>COVID hit and Chris was furloughed.\u00a0 Luckily Chris had his savings.<\/p>\n<p>Most people in his situation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lost money in the stock market because it tanked and they had to liquidate it for expenses;<\/li>\n<li>Had car payments they couldn\u2019t afford; or<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/how-much-house-can-i-afford\/\">Bought a house they couldn\u2019t afford<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These people didn\u2019t manage their risk and put themselves in a bad situation. Most had to take out credit card debt and pay 20% interest rates on it!<\/p>\n<h2>The Return Was There<\/h2>\n<p>Luckily for Chris, he found a job two months after he was furloughed.<\/p>\n<p>The result of his plan was he did not need to use credit cards.\u00a0 He also did not have to sell any of his investments.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, when investments dropped in March of 2020 he didn\u2019t panic!<\/p>\n<p>His wife then was able to get a job six months later.\u00a0 At that point, they had a high ability to take investment risk.\u00a0 Their ability to take risk increased because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dual incomes; and<\/li>\n<li>They had a decent amount in savings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instead of using the extra money to pay off credit cards, Chris was able to invest the extra money and do so aggressively.<\/p>\n<p>He was able to buy stocks at a low which is obviously a major advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Now 2 years later:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>His FitBUX Score is a 450;<\/li>\n<li>He has $70k in savings; and<\/li>\n<li>He is in the process of buying a house.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manage your risk and your return will be there is a lesson I was taught as a very young age.
