{"id":14676,"date":"2022-08-30T14:00:17","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T19:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/?p=14676"},"modified":"2022-09-13T13:47:19","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T18:47:19","slug":"physical-therapy-school-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/physical-therapy-school-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Physical Therapy School Costs &#038; How To Deal With It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Its no secret that physical therapy school costs are going up.\u00a0 In fact, all graduate programs are increasing tuition at a ridiculous rate.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I will discuss:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is driving the increase in physical therapy school costs;<\/li>\n<li>The options you have to deal with it; and<\/li>\n<li>What the actual cost of physical therapy school is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why Does Physical Therapy School Cost So Much &amp; Who Is To Blame?<\/h2>\n<p>There are two major players that take most of the blame for higher physical therapy school costs.\u00a0 The APTA and DPT programs.<\/p>\n<p>Below, I dive into why they are <strong><u>not<\/u><\/strong> to blame.<\/p>\n<h3>The APTA<\/h3>\n<p>Physical therapists bring up a number of reasons why the APTA is to blame. However, I&#8217;m going to focus on the one that I hear most often.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apta.org\" target=\"_blank\">APTA<\/a>, the specific blame I hear the most for the rise in physical therapy school cost is associated with the 2020 vision statement.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the vision statement made it a requirement that all programs offer a Doctorate instead of a masters degree.<\/p>\n<p>The reason people blame the vision for the increase in physical therapy education cost is the added time to get the Doctorate.\u00a0 For those that are not aware, the DPT typically takes 36 months to complete whereas the masters typically took 24 months.\u00a0 This longer time period is then blamed for the dramatic increase in costs.<\/p>\n<h4>Why This Is False<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, more months of school increases costs.\u00a0 However, vision 2020 is not the reason for the increase in physical therapy school cost.<\/p>\n<p>The facts are when you compare the increase in costs for the overall program relative to other graduate and Doctorate programs, the increase is relatively the same across the board.\u00a0 For example, if you compared the increased cost of the DPT vs the MOT\/OTD, PAs, SLP, NP, etc\u2026 you\u2019d see similar cost increases.<\/p>\n<p>If the change from a masters to a doctorate was to blame we would see that physical therapy school cost outpaced other graduate\/doctorate programs.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, its na\u00efve to think that programs would be cheaper simply because it took less time to complete the degree.\u00a0 Instead, it is my opinion that the programs would still charge the same amount. I explain this opinion in a section further down.<\/p>\n<h3>The Programs<\/h3>\n<p>The DPT programs are also not to be blamed for the increase in physical therapy school costs.\u00a0 The Chairs of the programs are powerless against the rise in tuition prices.<\/p>\n<p>This is why over 150 DPT programs have reached out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/student-loan-planner\/\">FitBUX<\/a> to ask for help.\u00a0 They know they can\u2019t do anything about the cost of the program.\u00a0 However, they want to provide students with the knowledge on how they can tackle the student loans post-graduation.<\/p>\n<h3>Actual Costs Of The Programs<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, the cost of the programs have grown and again I\u2019ll touch on this more later. However, people get confused and blame the DPT when its not 100% to blame.<\/p>\n<p>Most get upset about the cost because they relate the cost to the amount of student loans they have.\u00a0 However, most of the debt is to cover cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>Cost of living expenses are going to be incurred regardless of if you go to school or not.\u00a0 In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/cost-of-living-student-loans\/\">cost of living<\/a> is a symptom of the economy and other government policies.\u00a0 Therefore, you should be upset about the cost of living going up.\u00a0 However, the blame is often misplaced and is associated with the DPT.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Are PT School Costs Going Up<\/h2>\n<p>There are many reasons.\u00a0 However, I\u2019m going to focus on the two that are the main culprit in my opinion.<\/p>\n<h3>Government Policy<\/h3>\n<p>Back in 2010, the Government uncapped the amount of Direct Grad Plus loans you can get for grad school.<\/p>\n<p>One of the driving reasons was to redistribute the burden of the student loan industry to grad students.\u00a0 I explain this in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/podcast\/4-solutions-student-loan-crisis\/\">more detail in this podcast<\/a> but I\u2019ll summarize below.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate students have the lowest default rate on student loans. This occurs because they have the most stable well-paying jobs.\u00a0 The members of government that championed these policies were very vocal about having grad students \u201csubsidize\u201d undergrads.<\/p>\n<p>On top of this, Direct Grad Plus loans charge over 4% in origination fees.\u00a0 So in the past, if you borrowed 50k you would be charged about 2k in fees.<\/p>\n<p>Its now common for us to see DPTs with over 100k in Plus loans.\u00a0 At 100k, that is $4k in origination fees.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, nobody pays that fee out of pocket. It is wrapped into the loans.\u00a0 Therefore, in my example you are paying interest on 4k instead of 2k.<\/p>\n<h3>Universities<\/h3>\n<p>Notice I said universities <strong>NOT <\/strong>the programs.\u00a0 There is a big difference.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve worked for a university so I understand the pressure department heads are under to increase revenue by all means necessary.\u00a0 This includes non-profit and private universities.<\/p>\n<p>Its also horrible policies. I can\u2019t tell you the number of times I\u2019ve heard, \u201cWe don\u2019t really need xyz but if we don\u2019t spend it our budget gets cut next year.\u201d\u00a0 That is a horrible policy.<\/p>\n<p>Again, its not a policy put in place by the physical therapy program. Its policies put in place by universities and politicians.\u00a0 It makes me sick when I go to universities and brand new buildings are 50% &#8211; 75% empty!<\/p>\n<p>Every program chair we\u2019ve worked with makes similar statements to me followed up with a similar question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCost are ridiculous but its completely out of our hands. The most we can do is fight for tuition freezes which we might get for a year or two but then are told it needs to increase.\u00a0 We are fighting a losing battle. What do I think they can do to make the cost of physical therapy school more affordable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So please, know your professors and programs are doing everything they can.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it is out of their control.<\/p>\n<h2>How To Deal With Physical Therapy School Costs<\/h2>\n<p>You can\u2019t control tuition and you largely can\u2019t control cost of living. You can only try to minimize it.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, your first step is to minimize costs. However, that will most likely not be enough.<\/p>\n<p>You need to develop a plan and I\u2019m not referring to after you graduate. I\u2019m talking about now!<\/p>\n<p>You should build out a plan to see what is realistic.\u00a0 Doing so will allow you to know what financial options you have post-graduation.<\/p>\n<p>From there, you can begin doing your research on various PT settings such as how much they pay.\u00a0 Once you know that information, you can begin to position your career while you are in school.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t tell you how many new grads we talk to that don\u2019t do this.\u00a0 Then they graduate and choose the setting they want to work in.
