{"id":11420,"date":"2021-11-14T02:31:05","date_gmt":"2021-11-14T08:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/?p=11420"},"modified":"2025-02-06T09:21:32","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T15:21:32","slug":"refinancing-student-loans-co-signer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/refinancing-student-loans-co-signer\/","title":{"rendered":"Refinancing Student Loans With A Co-Signer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are two primary reasons for refinancing student loans with a co-signer.\u00a0 In this article we discuss both in more details and share a few other pointers.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"t-1738855125134\">Reason #1: Qualifying<\/h2>\n<p>The first reason for refinancing student loans with a co-signer is to qualify if you have tried to refinance on your own and were declined.<\/p>\n<p>However, before adding a co-signer you may have be declined because of a mistake.\u00a0 The three application mistakes we see most often are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A miscommunication about the documents needed between you and the lender,<\/li>\n<li>You went to the wrong lender and a better one may fit you based on your qualifications (check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/best-student-loan-refinance-companies\/\">8 best student loan refinance companies article to find out more about qualification standards<\/a> at each company), and<\/li>\n<li>You may have gotten declined but there are steps you can take to get you qualified on your own in 2 &#8211; 3 months such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/one-way-increase-credit-score\/\">improving your credit<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: If you need help with the above, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/student-loan-refinance\/\">FitBUX&#8217;s free student loan refinance service<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you exhausted these options, then adding a co-signer may give the student loan refinance company the comfort to give you the loan.\u00a0 However, your co-signer will now be liable for the loan.\u00a0 There is information you need to know about the liability element which we discuss a little later on.<a name=\"reason2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"t-1738855125135\">Reason #2: Interest Rate<\/h2>\n<p>The second reason for refinancing student loans with a co-signer is to get a lower interest rate.\u00a0 For instance, if you just graduated and have a limited credit history, you may not get a great rate with a lender that relies heavily on credit data when making an approval decision.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you add a co-signer, such as a parent, with a well-established (and good!) credit history, you will be considered less \u201crisky\u201d by the lender. Therefore, you may be able to get a lower rate.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cquality\u201d of the co-signer matters greatly. We discuss these characteristics below.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"t-1738855125136\">When Will A Co-Signer Make A Difference?<\/h2>\n<p>As previously mentioned, each student loan refinance company is a little different.\u00a0 However, there are two general rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your co-signer\u2019s credit score needs to be higher than yours,<\/li>\n<li>Your co-signer\u2019s annual gross income should be higher than yours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your co-signer is retired, they will have to show significant retirement income for them to help you on the loan.<\/p>\n<p>These are the general rules of when a co-signer will help. The reason they are rules is that student loan refinance companies will only look at one applicant for qualifications, you or your co-signer. They will not take combined incomes into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The two companies that make an exception to this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/2019-splash-financial-student-loan-refinance-review\/\">Splash Financial<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/2019-laurel-road-student-loan-refinance-review\/\">Laurel Road<\/a>.\u00a0 They a special spousal co-signer option. Using this option will allow you to use combined income on your application if you are married and use your spouse as a co-signer.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"t-1738855125137\">Co-signer Release Option<\/h2>\n<p>There are scenarios where co-signers are worried about being liable for a loan.\u00a0 Therefore, some refinance companies have added a co-signer release option to make things easier.<\/p>\n<p>The co-signer release is a stated number of months of on-time payments. Once you satisfy that time period, you can apply to have the co-signer released from the liability. For example, a 36 month co-signer release means once you make 36 on-time payments you can apply to have your co-signer release from the liability.<\/p>\n<p>This option varies for each student loan refinance company. I\u2019ve seen a lot of parents say no to co-signing because they didn\u2019t want the liability.
