But diversification is just something that brokers came up with, so they don\u2019t get sued. If you want to get rich\u2026 you have to concentrate and focus.\u201d \u2013 Jim Rogers<\/p>\n<p>I agree 100% with Jim, but when it comes to money management, most consumers don\u2019t understand what Jim is referring to so I want to take a minute in this article to clarify a few things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Why most people say they are \u201cdiversifying\u201d but in reality don\u2019t have the ability to do so and have \u201call their eggs\u201d in one basket; and<\/li>\n<li>&nbsp;The difference between investing and money management.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>My Money Management Strategy Diversifies My Assets, What Do You Mean I\u2019m Not Diversified?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/d\/diversification.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Investopedia<\/a> defines diversification as \u201ca&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/r\/riskmanagement.asp\" target=\"_blank\">risk management<\/a>&nbsp;technique that mixes a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/w\/wide-variety.asp\" target=\"_blank\">wide variety<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/i\/investment.asp\" target=\"_blank\">investments<\/a>&nbsp;within a portfolio. The rationale behind this technique contends that a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/p\/portfolio.asp\" target=\"_blank\">portfolio<\/a>&nbsp;constructed of different kinds of investments will, on average, yield higher returns and pose a lower risk than any individual investment found within the portfolio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For diversification to \u201cwork\u201d you have to hold a large array of different assets and cannot have one asset dominate your asset portfolio\u2026this is why most Americans who believe they are following a diversified strategy really are not.<\/p>\n<p>For example, many Americans who have financial assets to invest, also own a house.&nbsp; For this example, let\u2019s assume you have a home with $250,000 in equity.&nbsp; To be \u201cproperly\u201d diversified, let\u2019s assume that one asset should not make up more than about 5% of your portfolio, which most investment professionals would argue would still be on the high side.&nbsp; That means that to \u201cproperly\u201d diversify your entire portfolio of assets, you would have to have a total of $5.0 million, and that is just with $250,000 in home equity.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, a vast majority of Americans have nowhere near that amount of money.&nbsp; It\u2019s not uncommon to meet people that have 40% &#8211; 90% of their net worth in their primary residence.&nbsp; I\u2019ve heard some say that equity in a home doesn\u2019t count.&nbsp; Their reasoning is that it\u2019s their \u201chome\u201d and not a financial asset.&nbsp; However, the bottom line is its\u2019 an asset.<\/p>\n<p>So, should you try to diversify or listen to Jim Rogers?&nbsp; It depends on your goals&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Investing vs. Money Management<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ve often heard people say, \u201cI used a financial advisor but he didn\u2019t know what he was doing. I didn\u2019t get the returns that I wanted\u201d or \u201cI lost money on my investments.\u201d&nbsp; People say this because they have a misconception of what a financial advisor\u2019s job is.<\/p>\n<p>Their job is to manage your money, which entails reducing the risk based on your situation and to do so with the money you gave him to manage (i.e., he helps you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitbux.com\/articles\/asset-allocation-made-simple\/\">diversify your assets)<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Consumers often think financial advisors are supposed to pick the next \u201chot\u201d stock that earns 30% a year.
